Phoenix beats Falcons; Lorain out runs Shaw

Week 5

Oberlin 43, Firelands 35: In a shootout between two cross-town rivals, The Phoenix defeated the Falcons on Friday night on the running of Oberlin’s Kiylan Bugg.

Bugg ran wild over the Falcons. He totaled 426 yards rushing and scored five touchdowns on the night. Bugg’s first touchdown was on the opening kickoff that went for 73 yards. His final and game clinching touchdown was on a 45-yard run with over six minutes left in the fourth quarter.

“It was the first game we played fourth quarters.” Oberlin head coach Fred Howery. “The kids did not quit.”

Oberlin (2-3, 1-1) will return home for the second time this season to play Lutheran West. Firelands (0-5, 0-2) will head to Keystone.

Lorain 34, Shaw 6: The Titans won their third straight game on Friday night on the shoulders of running back Sherman Saunders.

Saunders led the Titans in rushing with 123-yards and scored three touchdowns. Titans quarterback Eddie Williamson went 6 of 12 with 141-yards and one touchdown.

Elyria 38, Mayfield 28: The Pioneers got revenge for last season’s lost to the Wildcats and kept its perfect season going.

Elyria (5-0, 2-0) will hit the road for the third time this season as it goes to Brunswick next Friday.

Fairview 45, Brookside 10: The Warriors came back to beat the upset minded Cardinals on Friday night.

Brookside went up, 10-0, earlier in the game, but Fairview’s offense got rolling in the second quarter, and the Warriors didn’t look back. Fairview’s Jason Kish scored three touchdowns on the night for the Warriors.

Brookside (2-3. 1-1) will head to Buckeye next Friday.

Avon Lake 23, Berea-Midpark 8: The Shoreman got by the Titans on Friday night, giving the Titans their first lost in conference play.

Avon Lake (4-1, 2-0) will travel to Westlake next Friday at 7 p.m.

Columbia 49, Wellington 20: The Raiders continued their undefeated season and kept the Dukes winless on the season. Columbia quarterback Jay Banyasz went 15 for 23 with 199-yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 138-yards and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Columbia (5-0, 2-0) will host Fairview next Friday and Wellington will play at archrival Black River.

Oak Harbor 42, Edison 21: The Rockets flew by the Chargers on Friday night, making Edison winless in Sandusky Bay Conference play.

Edison (2-3, 0-2) will host Margaretta next Friday.

Perkins 28, Huron 14: The Pirates remain undefeated on Friday night and also give the Tigers their second loss of the season on Friday night.

Pirates quarterback David Doster scored the first touchdown on the night on a 1-yard run, early in the second quarter.

Perkins TreyVon Moore gave the Pirates a, 14-0 lead midway through the third quarter on a 2-yard run.

John Workman added to the Pirates lead with a 5-yard touchdown run, late in the third quarter.

Huron got on the scoreboard on a Cody Thompson 19-yard touchdown, with 1:19 left in the third quarter.

Perkins shut the door on a Huron comeback midway through the fourth quarter on a John Workman 7-yard touchdown. Giving the Pirates a, 28-7 lead.

The Tigers scored one more time in the game on a Tommy Bogden 7-yard pass from Thompson with 3:05 left in the game.

Huron (3-2, 1-1) will host Oak Harbor next Friday night and Perkins (5-0, 2-0) will head south to play Clyde.

Keystone 40, Brooklyn 28: The Wildcats won their second straight game and clawed the Hurricanes for their first win of the season on Friday night.

Keystone (3-2, 2-0) will host Firelands next Friday.

Mapleton 28, New London 27: The Mounties outlasted the Wildcats at home and gave New London its first loss in Firelands Conference play.

New London (3-2, 1-1) will host St. Paul next Friday night.

Norwalk 40, Ontario 12: The Truckers defeated the Warriors and got back on the right track after last week’s lost to Tiffin Columbian.

Norwalk (4-1, 1-1) travel to Sandusky next Friday.

Tiffin Columbian 42, Sandusky 12: The Tornadoes stormed by Sandusky, giving the Blue Streaks their first loss in Northern Ohio League play.

Sandusky (1-4, 1-1) will host Route 250 rival Norwalk.

Toledo Start 25, Vermilion 10: The Spartans beat Sailors to pick up their first win of the season.

Vermilion (2-3) will play its final home game of the season next Friday against Ontario.

Olmsted Falls 29, Westlake 19: The Bulldogs upset the Demons on Friday night, giving Olmsted Falls its first win of the season.

Fairfield Christian Academy 62, Open Door 24: Fairfield Christians handed the Patriots their fifth straight loss on the season.

Open Door quarterback Dan Stintsman went 11 of 30 for 213-yards passing with three touchdowns.

Open Door will hit the road to play Gilmour Academy next Saturday.

Sandusky Blue Streaks notch first win; Huron Tigers rout St. Mary Panthers

Week 4

Sandusky picked up its first win of the season on Friday night defeating Shelby, 20-6 in Northern Ohio League action.

Gene Porter gave the Blue Streaks the lead with 6:18 left in the third quarter on a 58-yard TD run. Isaiah Margheim also scored on a 24-yard TD run.

Tiffin Columbian 24, Norwalk 20: The Truckers’ losing streak at Whitney Field against the Tornadoes continues.

CCC 51, Vermilion 0: The Sailors were routed by the Ironmen on the road.

Huron 41, St. Mary 7: The Tigers routed the Panthers in Sandusky Bay Conference action.

New London 42, Crestview 20: The Wildcats (3-1) opened up Firelands Conference play with a win over the Cougars.

Chalker 34, Open Door 0: The Wildcats shut out the Patriots, who fell to 0-4.

North Olmsted-Westlake: The Eagles led the Demons, 21-0 when the game was postponed. The game will resume at 3 p.m. today.

Midview-Rocky River: The Middies lead the Pirates, 21-13 with 7:46 left to play in the first half. The game will resume at 6 p.m. today

Columbia-Firelands: The Raiders were leading the Falcons, 14-0 when lighting and rain postponed the game. The game will resume today at 2 p.m.

Brooklyn-Brookside: The Cardinals were up 10-7 on the Hurricanes when lightning postponed the game. The game will resume today at 2:30 p.m.

Buckeye-Oberlin: The Bucks led the Phoenix, 17-0 when lightning and rain postponed the game. The teams will resume play at 4 p.m. today.

Fairview-Wellington: The Warriors are leading the Dukes, 21-0 when lighting and rain postponed the game. The teams will resume play today at 3 p.m.

Monroeville-Western Reserve: The Roughriders lead the Eagles, 7-0 when lightning and rain postponed the game. The teams will resume the game today at 6 p.m.

Lorain Titans notch 1st win; North Ridgeville Rangers fall

Week 3

NORTH RIDGEVILLE — Rangers star sophomore running back DeMario McCall scored two rushing touchdowns to bring his season total to 12, but North Ridgeville fell to North Olmsted, 35-28, Friday night. 
Eagles running back Ben Kurcsak scored the game-winning touchdown with 3:31 left to play in game, handing the Rangers their first loss of the season. North Ridgeville quarterback Jason Lucas also had two touchdowns, both coming on runs of 13 and 20 yards. The Rangers (2-1) will continue non-conference play next Friday when they host Avon Lake.

Lorain 52, Toledo Scott 12: The Titans got their first win of the season by defeating the Bulldogs in blowout fashion. Titans running back Sherman Saunders led Lorain in rushing with 223 yards and two touchdowns.

Titans quarterback Eddie Williamson also had a big game. He went 10 of 13 passing with 231 yards and three touchdowns. “We played a game great tonight,” Lorain head coach Tony Shoulders said. “I told them, if we played like the way we did against Midview, we will win tonight.”

Lorain (1-2) will start conference play next Friday when it hosts Warrensville Heights.

Norwalk 44, Western Reserve 7: The Truckers (3-0) ran over the Roughriders and will host Tiffin Columbian next week to start Northern Ohio League play. Western Reserve (1-2) will host Monroeville next Friday.

Margaretta 21, Brookside 7: One week after snapping their 15-game losing streak, the Cardinals got clawed by the Polar Bears. Brookside (1-2) will host Brooklyn to start Patriot Athletic Conference play next Friday.

Fairview 10, Bay 6: The Warriors stayed undefeated by beating the Rockets, who received their only points of the night on a Nick Best one-yard touchdown run in the second half. Bay (0-3) will host Elyria Catholic next Friday.

Perkins 65, Fostoria 6: The Pirates kept rolling as they defeated the Redmen. Perkins (3-0) will travel to Edison to start Sandusky Bay Conference action next week.

Galion 28, Keystone 13: The Wildcats suffered their second straight loss to the Tigers. Keystone (1-2) will host Clearview next Friday at 7 p.m.

Seneca East 42, Monroeville 18: The Tigers handed the Eagles their third straight loss of the season. Monroeville (0-3) will travel to Western Reserve to start Firelands Conference play next Friday at 7 p.m.

Colonel Crawford 33, New London 26: The Eagles handed the Wildcats their first loss of the season. New London (2-1) will head to Crestview next Friday.

Columbia 43, Northwestern 42: The Raiders escaped from their second one-point victory over the Huskies. Raiders quarterback Jay Banyasz did everything for Columbia. He went 15 of 21 passing for 185 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 21 carries for 118 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Northwestern field goal kicker Ryan Moore missed the extra point attempt with eight seconds left in the game. “We thought they were going for two down there,” Columbia head coach Jason Ward said. “That was a big victory for us.”

Columbia (3-0) will head to Firelands to start Patriot Athletic Conference play next Friday.

Richmond Heights 36, Oberlin 7: Oberlin’s Kiylan Bugg was the only bright spot for the Phoenix with a 3-yard touchdown run in a losng effort against the Spartans.

Oberlin (1-2) will host Buckeye to start conference play next Friday at 7 p.m.

Ashland 41, Sandusky 13: The Arrows speared the Blue Streaks to a five-game losing streak dating back from last season. The Blue Streaks had two rushing touchdowns on the night, one on a Ja’Dion Moore 17-yard run and the second coming on a Ben Fuller 1-yard run.

Sandusky (0-3) will host Shelby to start Northern Ohio League play next Friday.

Lincoln West 32, Open Door 7: The Wolverines dealt the Patriots their third straight loss. Open Door (0-3) will hit the road next Friday night to play Chalker.

St. Mary 40, Danbury 14: The Panthers picked up their first win of the season by defeating the Lakers. The Panthers outgained the Lakers on the ground, 275-140. St. Mary quarterback Trevor Fitzhum went 11 of 12 passing with 166 yards and four touchdowns.

St. Mary (1-2) will head to Huron to start Sandusky Bay Conference action next Friday at 7 p.m.

 

Columbia gets revenged over Fairview

COLUMBIA STATION — On an rainy Friday night in Columbia, the Raiders got their revenged against the Fairview Warriors by running away to an 35-7 win.

Fairview (3-6, 3-3) spoiled Columbia’s (8-1, 6-0) chance of making the playoffs and winning the Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division last season, but Columbia came out on Senior Night and played perfect football to beat the Warriors.

The Raiders ran all over Fairview by out rushing them 252 yards to 26 yards. Leading rusher for Columbia was quarterback Jay Banyasz. He had 18 carriers for 113 yards. Banyasz also had four rushing touchdowns.

“It was an team effort” Columbia quarterback Jay Banyasz said. “My offensive line opened up holes for me and my receivers had get blocks”.

Banyasz scored the first of his four touchdowns on an 55-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, giving Columbia an early 7-0 lead.

Columbia fullback Jacob Kleinhenz double the Raider lead late in the first quarter, on an 2-yard run making 14-0 Raiders.

Banyasz just kept running in the second quarter, he had two 4-yard touchdown runs making the score 27-0 Columbia going into halftime.

Fairview’s best drive of the game was the third quarter when, Warrior quarterback Jason Kish threw a 11-yard slant to wide receiver Corey Schmidt putting them on the board, but still down 27-7 to Columbia.

Banyasz final touchdown of the game was on broken pass play, where he ran for 18-yards for an touchdown in the fourth quarter and giving the final score 35-7 Columbia.

“This was a big win for us.” Columbia coach Jason Ward said. “It’s about us getting better each week and this was are most complete we played.”

Next week, Columbia will be heading to their rival Clearview, where the Patriot Athletic Conference and playoffs are up for the taking. Fairview will finished out the 2012 season facing cross-town rival Lutheran West. Both games kickoff at 7.

Falcons claw Wildcats

LaGRANGE — The Firelands Falcons won their second straight game on Friday night, beating the Keystone Wildcats 14-7.

Firelands (2-5, 2-2) were lead by senior duo Joe Hyster and Zack Hofecker. They both ran all over the Wildcats (3-4, 2-2) defense. Racking up a team total of 201 yards.

“I wasn’t throwing the the ball that good.” Falcon quarterback Joe Hyster said. “So we had the lead and we just run the clock out.”

Hyster did find sussess in the second quarter, when he hooked up with Jacob Parker on 13-yard pass to give Firelands an 7-0 lead.

On Firelands first drive of the second half, they took off eight minutes off the clock and drove the ball all they down to the Wildcat 3 yard line, but they couldn’t score when a bunch of Wildcats block the 28 yard field goal try.

Firelands quarterback Hyster show off his speed early in the fourth quarter. He had a 67 yard run all the way down to the Falcon 3 yard line and then, finished the 3 play, 70 yard drive on a 2-yard touchdown run up the middle, pushing the lead up to 14-0.

“He (Hyster) is a senior leading, that steps ups both offensively and defensively .” Firelands coach Mike Passerrello said. “You can see it in his eyes he wants it so badly.”

Keystone caught a break late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Kobe Whalen found C.J Conard on a 48-yard touchdown pass, cutting the Falcon lead to 14-7.

The Wildcats did have one more drive with under three minutes left in the, but with four straight incomplet passes, Keystone could find the endzone and the Falcons come away with a win.

“We just couldn’t keep our offense on the field.” Keystone coach Rob Ciarico said. “Hats off to Firelands for a great gameplan and they found a way to win.’

Next week, Firelands will be looking for the third straight win, as they host the Buckeye Bucks and Keystone will be a rival Wellington. Both games kick off at 7 p.m.

Sailors sink Rockets

VERMILION — The Vermilion Sailors came from behind on Friday night, beat the Bay Rockets 19-14.

Bay (2-4, 0-3) jumped out really in the game, when Vermilion (2-4, 1-2) would fumble on their first play of the game. On Bay’s second play of the game, quarterback Jake Best connected on a Danny Heideloff, 21-yard touchdown pass, leading out of the gates 7-0.

Bay would go up by two touchdowns on Vermilion midway through the first quarter by Jake Best throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Voiers.

Vermilion would get one score back in the second quarter when running back Mike Repko finished off an 12 play, 88 yard drive on a 1-yard touchdown, making it 14-7 Rockets going halftime.

The Sailors get tricky in the third quarter when, backup quarterback Seth Konard threw an 23-yard touchdown pass to starter quarterback Forrest Boyd. Cutting the Rocket lead down to 14-13.

Vermilion played great defense in the fourth quarter, making Bay punt late in the game and the Sailors would capitalize on that. Their running back Mike Repko had a big 27 yard run on Vermilion’s last drive of the game and it helped them out when, Forrest Boyd found fullback Kyle Shreves on a 14-yard touchdown pass, giving them the lead late in the by the score of 19-14.

Bay would drive down the help on their last drive and the Sailors stop them in their own end zone, giving Vermilion a Homecoming win.

“Tonight was a very special night for the kids.” Vermilion coach Rob Duray said. “We responded back after being down 14-0 and tonight’s game, was the birth of the new Vermilion program.”

Next week, Vermilion will be at Elyria Catholic and Bay will host Lakewood. Both games kickoff at 7 p.m.

Phoenix beat Falcons

HENRIETTA TOWNSHIP – It was a lot of first for the Oberlin Phoenix (5-0, 2-0) on Friday night. They beat there cross town rival Firelands Falcons (0-5, 0-2) by the score of 28-6 for the since, both teams were in the old Lorain County Conference in 1999. It is also the first time that Oberlin will head into Stripes Divisional play with a record of 5-0.

“We fill very good about that”, Oberlin Coach Fred Howery said. “My seniors are leading right now and it was great win for Oberlin”.

The dynamic duo of Jason Moore and Kalif Townsend lead the way for the Phoenix. They both ran the for over 100-yards and combined for a total of 300-yards rushing. They also combined for the four touchdowns scored by the Phoenix offense.

“If I’m not getting the ball, I’m blocking for Jason for him to get in space”, running back Kalif Townsend said.

Oberlin’s first score of the night was by Tyler Thomas 46-yard pass from Moore, making it 7-0 Phoenix.

In the second quarter, Thompson finished up an Phoenix seven play 73-yard drive by a 2-yard touchdown run, growing the Phoenix lead to 14-0.

Moore also set up on defense by getting two interceptions early for the second half.

He also had two rushing touchdowns in the second half for Oberlin. One was a 15-yard touchdown run and the other was an 85-yard touchdown run. Pulling the lead up to 28-0 Phoenix.

Firelands offense couldn’t get anything going against the Oberlin defense. They only had team total of 172-yards of total offense in the and 20 of those yards were in the air.

There only scoring drive of the game for Firelands was late in the fourth quarter when Austin Stevanus scored an 3-yard touchdown run. That would make it 28-6 Firelands.

“We have a bunch of freshman out there”, Firelands coach Mike Passerrello said. “I’m proud of this kids for not stopping and when your 0-4, you can easily throw in the towel and these kids didn’t.

Oberlin would finished the game with total of 417-yards of offense. They also out gained Firelands in first downs by having a 15-9 edge.

“We got Columbia next week”, coach Howery said. There the team to beat on our side, they been to the playoffs and there going tough to beat next week”.

Next week Firelands will be at Wellington and Oberlin will host Columbia. Both games kickoff at 7 p.m.

Rangers get first win over Sailors

VERMILION – The North Ridgeville Rangers got their first win of the season on Friday night by beating the Vermilion Sailors 47-17. North Ridgeville (1-3, 1-0) did the basic to beat the Sailors (1-3, 0-1) by running the ball and playing great defense. The Ranger defense held Vermilion to only 240-yards of total offense on Friday, to which the pass defense of North Ridgeville also held Vermilion to zero yards of passing.

“It was nice to open the West Shore Conference with a win”. Rangers coach Jeff Riesen said. “Vermilion won last week against their big rival in Firelands and we know, we had to play well”.

The man who led the charge on the ground for North Ridgeville was running back Paul Sonergo, who had 12 carriers, for 105-yards, and four touchdowns for the Rangers.

Ridgeville as a team finished with 376-yard of rushing offense on the ground, include 116-yards passing and two touchdowns from Ron Traut.

Vermilion would take an early lead in the game by a Seth Konrad 25-yard field goal to make 3-0 Sailors.

North Ridgeville will take the lead back from Vermilion and never looked back on  Paul Sonergo’s first touchdown of the game with an 5-yard run to make 6-3 Rangers.

Early in the second quarter, Paul Sonergo scored his second touchdown of the night on an 8-yard run to make it 14-3 Rangers.

After a Ranger fumble, Vermilion would recovered the fumble and setup a 23-yard scoring drive to cap off by a Kyle Shreves 10-yard run to cut the Ranger lead to four. Making it 14-10 North Ridgeville.

Ridgeville for most of the first half, they ran the football. Until their last drive of the first half when, Ron Traut went 6-6 passing for 67-yards and finished the drive by a 19-yard pass to Jake Lavelle to make it 20-10 Rangers going into halftime.

On the Rangers opening drive of the second half, Ron Traut would again attack the Vermilion passing defense and hooked up with teammate Zack Bowden for a 34-yard pass to make it 27-10 North Ridgeville.

After a 44-yard run by Zack Bowden, Paul Sonego would get his third rushing touchdown of the night on a halfback drive up the middle for a 3-yard touchdown to make 34-10 North Ridgeville.

Early in the fourth quarter, Vermilion would have great field position at Midfield but, had the punt the ball back to Ridgeville. Paul Sonego would finished up a 6 play, 51-yard drive by a 12-yard dive up the middle, giving him his fourth touchdown of the game and increasing the Ranger lead to 41-10.

North Ridgeville would score their final touchdown of the night when, DeMario McCall would take a 26-yard sweep to the house to make it 47-10 Rangers.

The Sailors would make the score closer late in the fourth quarter on the Brad Cole 3-yard run to make it 47-17 North Ridgeville and that would also be the final score as well.

“When you lose 3 games, people start to ask what’s wrong with you, but you know when you play tough, you can be successful”. Coach Riesen said.

Next week in Week 5, North Ridgeville will host the Lakewood Rangers and Vermilion will also be hosting the Midview Middies as well. Kickoffs for both are set of 7.

Polar Bears run away against Cardinals

SHEFFIELD ­­– The Margaretta Polar Bears ran all over the Brookside Cardinals on Friday night by the score of 47-8. In Margaretta’s first two games, they only scored a team total of 20 points. In the the first quarter alone, they score 21 points against the Cardinals.

On Margaretta’s first drive of the game, the Polar Bears ran it right down the Brookside defensive. On the seven play 76-yard drive scoring drive, Stephen Freech capped the drive off with a 38-yard touchdown with 10:02 left in the first quarter to make it 7-0 Margaretta.

Midway through the first quarter, Margaretta would take advantage of great field position after a Brookside punt. They would score again to make it 14-0 over the Cards by a Austin Moore 35-yard pass from Tyler Hilton.

The Polar Bears defensive held strong on Brookside’s second drive of the game with a three and out and they would capitalize on that. Margaretta would hand the ball to three different running backs in series and the drive would finished on a Derek Abbott 27-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 Margaretta, with 47 seconds left in the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Brookside would fumble the ball away and the Polar Bears would recover and go back on offensive. They would have two back-to-back false start penalties against them and on the third play of the drive, Tyler Hinton would again hook up a 51-yard touchdown pass to Austin Moore to make 28-0 Margaretta.

With 5:35 left in the second quarter, Margaretta would go up by 5 touchdowns against the Cardinals, after a Ben Singer 30-yard run to make it the third different Polar Bear to score the ball in the end zone.

Margaretta would finish the first half with a team total of 210-yards rushing.

In the third quarter, the Polar Bear defensive would force a three and out from the Brookside offensive and then, it would only take one play by running back Stephen Freech to find the end zone for this second touchdown of the game by a 47-yard run to make it 41-0 Margaretta.

Margaretta would score their final touchdown of the game by a Ben Singer 4-yard run, making it 47-0 Polar Bears. That run would make it the fourth different Polar Bear running back to score a touchdown against the Cardinals.

The young Cardinals would start a drive all the way on the Polar Bear 1-yard line until, Jake Morgan would score on a 88-yard touchdown run and with a Kyle Houston 2-point conversion, the Margaretta Polar Bears will head back to Castalia winning by the final score of 47-8.

“Were so young, it’s going to be a battle”. Brookside Coach Thom Lesiecki said. “Were growing, getting better, and we’re going to win”.

Margaretta would finish with a team total of 409-yards rushing and total yards of 520-yards.

Next Friday is the beginning of conference play for both teams, as Brookside travels to Oberlin and Margaretta will host Oak Harbor. Both games start at 7.

Midview holds off Amherst

AMHERST, OHIO — The Midview Middies hold off the Amherst Comets on Friday night by the score of 21 to 13.

Amherst (0-2) would strike first after picking off Midview(2-0) Quarterback Cody Callaway with a 10-yard touchdown run by Comets Running Back Jordan Irvin to make 6-0 Amherst.

The Middies would answer right back early in the second quarter with a touchdown of there own, when Cody Callaway would connect on a  9-yard pass to Eric Lauer to make it 7-6 Midview.

They would score later in the second when Cody Callaway connect again with Eric Lauer on a 27-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-6 Middies going into halftime.

Midway thru the third quarter, Amherst would fumble the football and Midview would recover on the Midview 26-yard line. On the next play, Middie Quarterback Cody Callaway would throw for his third touchdown of the night. It was a 26-yard touchdown pass to Wide Receiver Zac Wilson to make 21-6 Midview.

Amherst would cut the lead to eight on a Derek Eibon 5-yard run to make it 21-13 Midview in early in the fourth quarter.

The Comets were threading late in the game, trying to score again with under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter but, the Middies defensive held Amherst to four incomplete passes and Midview would hold on beat the Amherst by the score of 21 to 13.

Next up for both teams is a battle of neighbors week when Clearview goes to Amherst and Elyria travels to Midview. Both games at set of a 7 o’clock kickoff.
